It can be difficult to choose which silicone sealant is the right one for the job.  Most sealants are designed for specific uses and have different capabilities.  Here are some of the different silicone sealant options and what they are used for.

Silicone Types:

General Purpose Silicone: It sticks well to most building materials and offers good elasticity and durability but doesn’t contain and fungicides.

Sanitary Silicone:  It is a powerful antibacterial and mold resistant formula, designed especially for applications in areas of increased humidity such as in kitchens and bathrooms.

Glazing Silicone:  It has a clear finish and adheres well to glass.  It is used for sealing around the of the glass in windows and doors, and bedding in glazing panels.

Frame Sealant Silicone:  It is used for sealing around windows and door frames.  It can withstand exposure to the weather and UV radiation better than other types of sealant.  It comes in a variety of colors to match wood and other common framing materials.

Neutral Cure Silicone:  This acetoxy silicone sealant releases alcohol as it cures and has almost no smell.  It is used for plastics, glass, aluminum, lead, stone, polycarbonate and masonry.  It cost more and takes one to five days to cure depending on the temperature, thickness and humid conditions.

Food Grade Silicone:  It has a very low toxicity and is designed for use in areas where food contact may occur.  Often it is used for sealing inside refrigerators.

Aquarium Silicone:  This silicone is specifically designed for the joining and sealing of glass in aquarium construction and applications. Do not use General Purpose or Building Silicone as it contains toxic materials.

High Temperature Silicone:  It is used for applications in electrical and industrial equipment, and for creating seals between high temperature surfaces.  When cured it can withstand temperatures up to 500°F – 572°F.

The right silicone sealant to use is determined by knowing the application you want to use it for.  Call Taychem if you are unsure of which sealant to use for your project.
